Having been '
desperate' to land ICC Intercontinental Cup success, that is exactly what Ireland did this weekend, dismantling UAE to win by an innings and 170 runs to guarantee a final spot against Canada.
They put behind them the disappointments of the recent ICC World Cricket League Division 1 tournament in Kenya where they lost narrowly on three occasions.
Ireland's emphatic success was built around a huge first innings score of 531 for 5 declared, with Eoin Morgan making 209 not out and Andre Botha 157. Jeremy Bray also chipped in with 82. Morgan and Botha shared a stand of 360 for the third wicket.
They then bowled superbly to bowl UAE out for 243 - Arshad Ali top scored with 74 but no other batsman could get past 38 as Trent Johnston took 3-53.
Putting the UAE in to bat again, the Irish bowlers ran riot. Led by Boyd Rankin (4-56), they bowled UAE out for 118 to seal a victory as emphatic as their World Cricket League campaign had been heart-breaking.
Trent Johnston also took 3-8, the first three wickets to fall as UAE slipped to 12-3, a position from which they would never recover.
